WITS IN MOTION

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What is social emotional learning (SEL)?
Social learning is about understanding relationships and emotional learning is about understanding our own and others' emotions. Our amazing social and emotional skills are the foundation of all healthy relationships. Being aware of our own emotions helps us to label, understand, and manage them. Recognizing and understanding others' emotions is at the root of empathy, kindness, and being able to take another's' perspective or stand in their shoes! As children grow up, they learn more and more about their own feelings and needs, about how understand feeling and perspectives that are different from theirs, about how to respond to others' needs for help, and about how to resolve conflicts that inevitable arise between us. This SEL tool kit helps to foster the development of social emotional learning. Children learn to label and understand their own and others' emotions, to understand how emotions feel and change in different situations, and to understand that peer conflicts can be resolved!
  • What are the benefits of non-verbal learning, role-play, and dance for learning social and emotional skills?"
Children learn continuously about their own and others' emotions and how to be a good friend in their day-to-day activities. This non verbal video allows all children join the action, no matter what language, culture, or capabilities they bring with them. Each child will have their own way of interpreting what is happening in the video's episodes. Each child will also have their own solutions to the peer conflicts they see. This non verbal film opens a window for children and adults to see and feel the dancers' emotions and to discuss and share their experience with each other.
  • Is this an anti-bullying resource?
This resource helps to prevent bulling, hopefully before it starts. All children experience conflicts with their peers. Considerable research shows that SEL interventions are effective in promoting social and emotional competencies that are associated with academic success and social adjustment, emotional distress and conduct problems!
